Tuesday's class & Preparing for the exam

Yo.

I have spent the last few days putting (almost) all the reading responses up (there are one or two of you who didn't email them to me, which means I type them in by hand, which means I hate you and you're going to fail this course and thus university and never get a good job and your children will die of one of those weird skin infections that only ever happens to children whose parents don't submit things to me by email), so you now have the study guide. Use the labels on the right to look through them. If someone can figure out a sexy way to combine them into one easy to print off file, all power to you.

On Tuesday's class we'll have the last of the presentations and I'll hand out what I call "the cheat sheet" (I'll also put up a link to it for those who are missing).

Some people are bringing food: hey, just sayin'.

Sign-up sheet

For the record, I didn't miscount: you people love me so much that the numbers in my class keep increasing. So every reading now has three respondents, and two have four. Three of you have yet to sign-up for anything. Nevertheless, the newest list is on the door.

There's a presentation on Monday by the DeRoches (of the Anthropology Department) titled "'The Meal Makes Us Real': Being Italian in Cape Breton." I can't make it, but if you're keen, look it up. It's in the Sydney Credit Union Room (next to the Art Gallery in the Great Hall), from 1 to 2 pm.

Welcome, 2008

So this is it: here is where you'll find the posts of your peers about articles. The purpose is a sort of cumulative and collaborative study guide for the articles. I'll be more effusive (maybe) later. Meanwhile, you can see what was up last year, and get a feel for the sorts of things you may be doing.

Still obsessed with dumplings and sandwiches

I saw this cartoon (from this site) and thought it illustrated the direct/indirect distinction between North America and China (as symbolised by the hamburger or sandwich vs. the dumpling.

Final Exam: How-To

Reminder:

The final is set for April 10th, from 2:00 until 5:00, in room B260 (that's upstairs from the Student Services Centre).

Follow this link to a pdf of a cheat sheet: it explains the format and gives you guidelines for how to study, but (oh, how can I reiterate this enough) it is not a substitute for regular attendance and doing the readings.

And here's even more basic guidelines:
  • write in pen (blue or black) if possible: I don't read things you cross out, so you don't need to erase anything, so you don't need pencil, so there;
  • double space, unless your writing is particularly neat: I will do something good for the environment later to compensate, I promise;
  • bring extra pens;
  • bring cough suppressants that aren't in crinkly packaging;
  • bring a bottle of water;
  • be on time;
  • pee beforehand.

As a general rule, people can be late, but no one is allowed in after the first person leaves.

Revision 04/04/07: The cheat sheet has been revised to remind you that you may bring in a translation dictionary, but that for definition questions you are expected to provide an explanation of how a folklorist uses the term. (That is to say, they will help for the essay component, but not really for the short answer component.)

Frogs and Toads

Apparently, in China, there are people who like frogs and there are people who like toads. And never the twain shall meet.

This fascinating insight into the mysterious East is courtesy of those horrible, naughty students in Food and Culture 267, and the equally horrible 'Western' students who encouraged them in their torture of me.

Welcome

A little slow off the starting line, but here we are. Most of the posts up here will be the reading responses: they will be categorised by article authors with labels so that, if you look in the column to the right, you can easily find them. Things that I post will be differently labelled.

Remember: the responses go up unedited.

Edit: I have changed the dates of posts to correspond to the date of the assigned reading.
